Analyst reports that it is already difficult to cope with the

great increase of work which has occurred in his Department during recent years, and that it would be impossible under present con- -ditions to depute an officer to make the necessary borings at the

smelters' warehouses. I may mention in this connection that the

Import and Export Office makes a heavy call upon the services of

the First Assistant Analyst, while the Second Assistant has a

considerable amount of work in connection with the Government

Civil Hospital.

In view of the growing importance of this

trade, which has already assumed such considerable proportions, I

am of the opinion that the Government would be well advised to

fall in with the wishes of those concerned in it, more particular-

-ly as the existence of a Government Certificate of purity relied

upon both by buyers and by sellers should do much to place the trade upon a permanent basis. I may add that the increased

receipts by way of fees at the Government Laboratory during the past year has already rendered that institution practically self-

-supporting.

I have accordingly to recommend the appoint-

-ment of an additional Assistant Analyst upon the same salary as

that of the First Assistant, namely £360 rising to £420 by tri-

-ennial increments of £30, with $360 conveyance allowance, the

appointment to be on the temporary staff, the engagement being

for three years with the usual stipulation as to permanent employment modified by the condition that such permanent employ- -ment will be subject to the existence of a vacancy in the perma-

-nent staff. I enclose a form of particulars of the office. It is

desired that the candidate selected should be unmarried.
